The victim was Beverly Jean Gauthier 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Gauthier of Thompsonville. Manistee state police questioned a deer hunter, identified as Clifford McGirr Jr., about 30, of Springport, about the shooting, but authorities said police and Manistee County Prosecutor David Bailey were continuing the investigation this morning. According to authorities, the shooting occurred shortly before 5 p.m. about three miles south of Thompsonville in Manistee County's Springdale Township. Beverly and three or four young companions reportedly were riding a snowmobile and a sled being towed by the snow vehicle. Information about what happened still was somewhat confused this morning. One source said the youngsters heard a shot and were told by Beverly to duck. Then a second or third shot struck the girl in the eye. She was adjudged by a Manistee County coroner to have died instantly, authorities said. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Thompsonville Congreational Church, Rev. Richard Wilson of Frankfort Methodist Church officiating, with burial in Benzonia Cemetery. The body reposes at Bennett Funeral Home in Benzonia.
