James Somerville's obituary, Manistee, Manistee County, Michigan SUBJECT: James E. SOMERVILLE Obituary, Manistee County SUBMITTER: Nedra EMAIL: NEvans7115@aol.com DATE: Sep 17, 1999 SURNAMES: SOMERVILLE The Death of Our Esteemed Citizen James E. Somerville In the death of James E. Somerville, which occured Wednesday afternoon, Manistee has lost one of its most exemplary and revered citizens. Coming to our city some fifteen years ago, he at once allied himself with the religious element of the community, and became an active worker in the upbuilding of the moral and spiritual character of those about him. As a teacher in the Sabbath school, as a layman in the pulpit, and as a business man among business men, he ever inspired a hearty respect for his own personality and the principles which he so earnestly taught, and to which he so consistently adhered. For years he has been an acute sufferer from rheumatic pains, but through all the hours of trial his high christian character has stood the terrible ordeal, and an unwavering faith was a lamp unto his feet, lighting him over the dark places of the earth. The Methodist church of this city loses a faithful member, and society suffers a heavy loss in his death. Mr. Somerville was born in the north of Ireland in 1824, and came to this country at an early day. He learned the trade of harness-maker, at which line he was most successful, becoming the head of a large establishment of his own. He was emphatically a self-made man. The spare hours of his youth were spent in a search for knowledge, and his industry and perseverance were rewarded by the attainment of a most scholarly and erudite mind. His knowledge of things in general and his information regarding current events were quite remarkable. His broad mind and bright intelligence readily comprehended complex and weighty questions, and he was a most profound thinker. Although a man delighting in the pleasant paths of peace, when the flag of his adopted country was assailed he at once took up arms in her defense, and in her service he proved himself a brave and trusty soldier. The entire community unites in heartfelt sympathy with the bereaved wife and children in their deep affliction. James E. Somerville - 1 Nov 1824 to 24 Jan 1883.
