He was born, in Arcadia, on March 20, 1927, to Leo and Elta Tondu. At age 17, Bob joined the Merchant Marines and served during World War II as an able-bodied seaman on oil tankers, traveling between Texas and New York harbors. After the war, Bob joined the Army, serving with the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Benning, Ga. While in the Army, he met and married Katy Jo Ray on Nov. 6, 1949. Shortly thereafter, Bob was discharged from the Army. He spent the next 40 years as a licensed general builder in the Arcadia area, except for brief periods when he worked in Muskegon and the Flint area. Bob was a charter member of the Arcadia Lions Club and contributed extensively to efforts in support of the local community. Bob traveled throughout the United States and Canada. For the last 30 years they wintered in Gulf Shores, Ala. He loved boating and made two round-trips with friends down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. He had many hobbies and stayed active up until shortly before his death. Bob, most of all, enjoyed being with his family and friends, playing games, laughing, and reminiscing of earlier days in Arcadia. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. He was the last surviving member of the third-generation of the Tondu family to live in the Arcadia Valley. Bob will be cremated and his ashes laid to rest in Arcadia. A memorial service will be held at the Frankfort United Methodist Church at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, with Rev. Greg Culver officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Arcadia Lions Club. All are welcome. Donations may be directed to Munson Hospice. Arrangements are being handled by the Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
