About 11 o'clock yesterday morning Albert Hopstadt, a miner employed in the Cleveland Lake shaft, while standing near the mouth missed his footing and fell down the shaft to the third level, a distance of about 40 feet, striking on his head and shoulders. How he escaped breaking his neck is a mystery. His skull was badly fractured, however, and the chances for his recovery are small. He was taken to the Ishpeming hospital, where he is now receiving the best of care. Mr. Hopstadt lives on Nebraska Hill and is just about 29 years old. How the accident occurred he is unable to explain. Just before falling he was standing near the shaft talking to a fellow miner and in turning around stepped right into the opening. His companion made a grab at him, but failed to catch him, and the poor fellow fell to the bottom of the level below, striking the ground with terrific force. The fall will probably cost him his life, as his head is so badly crushed that the doctors think he cannot recover short of a miracle. Albert Hopstadt Dead.
