The Scanlon family emigrated about 1855, the younger William married Mary Carney about 1860, they moved to Grass Valley, California about 1861 where he was a gold miner for nine years working in hydraulic mines. They returned east in 1869, mined copper with his father in Houghton for a time and then moved to Negaunee about 1872 where he was an iron miner and diamond driller. The tombstone was carved by the elder William Scanlon. Also buried in the plot are four children of the younger William: William (1863-89 – Bright’s disease), Cornelius (1876-1900 – mining accident), Margaret (1868-80 – childhood disease) and Patrick (1877-1910 – railroad accident). It says “Scanlan” but the branch of the family in Negaunee spelled it as “Scanlon.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/marquette/photos/tombstones/negaunee/scanlan42353gph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/mifiles/ File size: 1.9 Kb
