Alonzo VanGilder was born Feb. 24, 1824 in Onondaga Co., NY.  He died May 21, 
1897 in Big Rapids, Mecosta Co., MI of Consumption.  His parents were Ransom & 
Azubah (VanTassel) VanGilder.  Alonzo married Maria Williams on Oct. 22, 1854 
in Fond du Lac Co., Wisconsin.

ALONZO VANGILDER was a farmer in section six of Big Rapids, Mecosta County, 
Michigan.  He was born Feb. 24, 1824 in Onondaga County, New York; the third 
son of Ransom and Azuba (Vantassel) VanGilder.  Ransom was a native of Vermont.
Alonzo settled in Wisconsin in 1846 to 1865.  He married at Foud du Lac, 
Wisconsin on Oct. 22, 1854 to Maria Williams who was born Jan. 16, 1826 in 
Onondago County, New York.  In Aug. 1865 they came to Mecosta County, Michigan 
and settled in Big Rapids.    Alonzo owns 100 acres of land.   40 acres in 
tillage, 20 acres clear for pasture and 40 acres of timber.   They have 4 
daughters and 2 sons;  Hannah M.; Anna R.; Mary E.; James R.; (died Feb. 
1881); Clara L. and Grant. 
Alonzo enlisted in the War of the Rebellion on Aug. 31, 1864 enrolling in Co. 
A, 38th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry on what is known as "the one year call".  
He was discharged honorably on June 2, 1865.  He was a republican.

Maria (Williams) VanGilder was born Jan. 16, 1826 in Onondaga Co., NY.  She 
died May 2, 1898 in Big Rapids, Mecosta Co., MI.  Her parents were James & 
Annie Williams.  Maria died of dropsy.

James R. VanGilder was the son of Alonzo and Maria.  He was born in 1862 in 
Wisconsin and died Feb. 26, 1881.
