Christopher B. Eyler September 16, 1940 - January 19, 2011 Colonel Chris Eyler died on January 19, 2011 at his home in Rhode Island. He was 70 years old. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane, the former Sara Jane VanDalen of Midland. He is also survived by his son, Patrick of Provo, Utah, his wife Pollyanna and their children, Elizabeth and Michael, and by his daughter, Erin Gerrish of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, her husband Chip and their children, Geoffrey and Lauren. He was predeceased by his son, Christopher B. Eyler, II. Colonel Eyler was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Midland High School in 1958. He enlisted in the Army as a private that year and went on to serve 35 years, rising to the rank of colonel. He was a graduate of the Defense Language Institute (Chinese Mandarin, Vietnamese, and Korean), the Army Command and Staff College, and the Naval War College. He held degrees from Michigan State University and the University of Kansas. He served in command and staff positions throughout the United States, Vietnam, Germany, and Korea. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He was also a licensed pilot. Colonel Eyler enjoyed spending time with his family and his dogs. He also enjoyed snorkeling, flying, skydiving, sport and commercial fishing, horseback riding, driving race cars, hot air ballooning, canoeing, and backpacking. He volunteered as a docent at the Rogers Williams Zoo in Providence, R.I., and as a driver for Meals on Wheels. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420 Rockville, MD 20850 (www.fisherhouse.org) are suggested. Funeral and burial are private.
