These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations. _____________________________________________________________________________ OBITUARY - Unknown Paper Jacob Blankertz Jacob Blankertz, one of the old reliable citizens, who came here with the German settlers, passed away on Sunday, May 19th at his home on Fremont St. He had been ill two weeks with pneumonia. Mr. Blankertz was born at Happers, Prussia, in 1837, and came to America at 12 years of age with his parents. The family settled in detroit where this son learned the painter's trade. Later he was employed by the government to paint their houses, and for a long time as foreman of a gang of men traversed the edges of the Great Lakes recoating the weather beaten towers. In'55, he moved to Monroe where he married Mrs. Dorothea Kopf. Of this marriage there are remaining two of the four children, Herman of Dearborn and Mrs. Charles Sperr of Frenchtown. Mrs. blankertz died in '68 and he afterward married Mrs. Adam Walldorf, the couple living together for 37 years. Mrs. blankertz died in 1905. The couple dwelt all those years in the quaint Walldorf building on front St., which was a combined home above and toy shop below. Mr. Blankertz pursued his work as painter in the city and Mrs. blankertz kept the little shop which for several generations provided the children of the town with their most cherished playthings. Of their children, there are also two remaining - Ferdinand of this city and Mrs. George Morlock of LaSalle, also three brothers, Wm. B. of Perrisburg, Albert B. of Detroit, and Herman B. of Saginaw. Mr. Blankertz kept at his work up to the time of his last illness and was particularly faithful in all undertakings. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and for many years recording secretary of the German Working Men's Association and had never been absent from a meeting of the latter. The funeral was held at 1:30 on Wednesday, Rev. H. Frincke officiating. Among those in attendance from away were: Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Lipprandt and Mrs. Kate Maier of Pigeon, Mr. & Mrs. Wm Blankertz of Perrysburg, Mr. & Mrs. Fred Kopf of Toledo, Mr & Mrs. Albert Blankertz and Mr & Mrs. Adam Walldorf of Detroit, also Mrs. Anton Blankertz of Saginaw.
