She retired 17 year ago after a 46-year career. She had worked in the IHM Creativity Center in Monroe after retirement and had prepared several craft items for sale for the upcoming IHM crafts fair. When she died, all were on a small table in her room, ready to be distributed. Sister Rose also enjoyed cooking and sewing. She was one of 10 children born in Detroit's Corktown to Mary D. and Daniel A. Shanahan. She joined the convent in 1927. In her later years, she reminisced about growing up in old Detroit and graduating from Holy Trinity High School. Her father and two of her brothers were Detroit policemen. Only one sister survives in her family. Sister Rose earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and had a teaching certificate. She taught in the following Michigan schools: Holy Rosary, St. Francis de Sales and St. Martin,Detroit; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens; St. Patrick, Wyandotte; St. Cyprian, Riverview; Our Lady of Lourdes, River Rouge; St. Mary, Wayne; Holy Cross, Marine City; St. Joseph, Monroe; and St. John, Jackson. A wake will be 1-9 p.m. today in the IHM Mother House, 610 W. Elm, in Monroe. A vigil service will be at 7 tonight in the chapel there. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery in Monroe. Rupp Funeral Home, in Monroe, was in charge of arrangements. dz
