The dead are Robert W. Sherd, 25, the pilot, and his brother, Harold L. Sherd, 2?, a bridegroom of four months. The crash occurred 4 1/2 miles southeast of Sheridan, just 300 feet from the Sherd farm home in Bushnell township, Montcalm County. In the matter of a few seconds, the father, Leslie Sherd, and a neighbor reached the plane. They pulled the brothers from the wreckage but both were believed instantly killed. According to a State Police report on the accident, the brothers had been in the air about 20 minutes prior to the crash and they were believed to have been circling for a landing when the plane nosed over in the midst of a bank and plunged into the fatal dive. Bother brothers were veterans of World War II. Harold enlisted in the Army in March of 1942 and served until November 1945, when he was discharged. He served with the Eighth Air Force in the European Theatre. He was married on June 28,1947, to Mary Ann Verbensky, who survives him. Robert Sherd served three and one-half years in the Navy. He graduated from Sheridan high school in 1941. It was revealed Wednesday that both were employed as attendants at the Ionia State Hospital here. Also surviving the two brothers are their parents, three sisters, Mrs. Weston Townsend, Mrs. Ralph Field and Betty at home; four brothers, Gerald of Sheridan, Duane, Ronald and Harland at home. Double funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Palo Baptist church under the auspices of veterans organizations. Burial will be in the Palo cemetery.
