Mrs. Pickel, Here 35 Years, Dies at Age 77
Mrs. Sylvia May Pickel, 2791 S. Mill Iron Road, Fruitport Township, a Muskegon 
resident 35 years, died at Hackley Hospital today following a long illness. 
She was 77 years old.
Born in Pierson, Jan. 22, 1879, the former Sylvia May Irwin, was educated 
there and in 1896, she married Donald Frank Pickel in Woodville. The couple 
later moved to Mancelona where they lived for several years before moving to 
Muskegon in 1921.
Preceded in death by her husband in 1934, she leaves four sons, James E. 
Pickel of Garden City, Ernest L. Pickel of South Bridge, Mass., Russell K. 
Pickel and Donald F. Pickel, both of Muskegon; two daughters, Mrs. Eva Strait 
of Fremont and Mrs. William Russell of Ravenna; five sisters, Mrs. Maude 
Beckner of Houghton Lake, Mrs. Nettie DeWeese of Inkster, Mrs. Judy Staffen of 
Morley, Mrs. Pearl Dewurtson of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Rose Bates of Hazel 
Park; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
