His parents, James and Annie (Mail) Russell were both natives of England. They settled in Oxford County in 1828, and there passed the remaining years of their lives. Mr. Russell was ten years old at the time of his father's death, and was 23 years old when his mother passed away. He was married to Harriet, daughter of Christopher and Jane (Smith) Stockdale, born in Canada, June 6, 1834. In 1869 Mr. Russell removed to Newaygo County and settled in what was then the township of Big Prairie, and bought 160 acres of land, to which he has added by purchase until he has 200 acres of fine land in Goodwell Township. Mr. Russell is neutral in politics, and has held the various school offices in the township. In 1882 he was elected Supervisor and held the office two years.
