Van Tassell [witness] ------------------------------------------------------------ Detroit, Mich. Apr. 5-1904 Hon. Com. of Pensions Washington, D.C. Sir: I have the honor to return the accompanying credibility inquiry in claim No. 678745, Mary Carey widow of James Carey, F 30 Mich. Vol. Inf. P.O. ad: Leamington, Prov. of Ontario. The Chief of the Board of Review directed that the claimant and her son be interviewed on the subject of dependence. I received the inquiry by transfer from Sp. Exr. Beecher Sterne, who had previously served notice on claimant and taken her statement. When in Pontiac, Mich., last Dec. I saw Judge Smith, mentioned by client, and took his deposition. I went searching for Ross H. Carey, the son, yesterday. Drove to his home but did not find him there; finally met him on the road perched on a load of hay; invited him to come off his perch, which he did, and I took his depostion on the spot. He lives on the farm and has improved it very materially during the past four years and now asks $3600 for it (assessed value). The farm is away back from the rail road-four or five miles and the roads leading to it are now in bad shape. The claimant is of good repute; so are the witnesses. For consideration of Chief East. Div. Very respectfully, F.W. Brandes Special Examiner iner
