Pontiac Daily Press 1920
Four generations are represented in this picute which includes Aaron Smith, 
early settler of Oakland County who celebrated his 94th birthday on Columbus 
Day at the home of his daughter, Mrs Caleb Surles, four miles north of Pontiac 
on the Baldwin road.

In the picture, Mr. Smith is holding his great grandson Leroy Smith, son of 
Mrs. Burton Smith of Myrtle Avenue, Pontiac, who stands at the left in the rear 
of the picture.  Beside her is her mother, the daughter of Mr. Smith, Mrs. 
Caleb H. Surles with whom the old gentleman resides.

Mr. Smith has lived in Oakland County 89 yers, having come with his parent, the 
late Mr and Mrs. Peter A. Smith, from Tompkins county, New York, when he was 
five years old.  The family settled on a government claim near Seymour Lake.

In 1853, Mr. Smith married Miss Anna Lizzie Beach and they took up their 
residence in a log house near his father's place which he had helped build on 
land that he had cleared.  It was at this place that Mr. and Mrs. Smith spent 
40 years.  They had eight children, five of whom are still living.  After this 
time they sold that farm and moved to Metamora.

Mrs. Smith died 24 years and Mr. Smith lived for 10 years with a daughter at 
Metamora, the late Mrs. Erma Francis.  During the last 13 years he has made his 
home most of the time with Mrs. Surles.

The five children who live are:  Mrs. Surle; Erastus Beach Smith, Mayville; 
Newton Smith, near Lapeer; Lewis Smith, Brooksville, Fla., and Alfred J. Smith, 
Coeur D'Alene, Ida.
