The family of Fred A. Chamberlain planned a surprise party for him last night, on his sixty-fifth birthday anniversary. So faking an errand to get him away from home, the family sent Chamberlain out in company with his son-in-law, Lewis Owens, and his grandson, Lewis Dale Owens, 18 months old. A few minutes later Chamberlain was killed, Owens was fatally hurt and the grandson was cut and bruised in an automobile accident. Owens died of a fractured skull at the city hospital early this morning, Chamberlain was killed almost instantly. Chamberlain was driving on the Dixie highway when he turned in front of the machine of James Butler, Ortonville, at the Walton boulevard. Coroner Voorhees said tonight that Butler would be questioned, but that witnesses did not hold him responsible for the accident. Joint funeral services for the men are to be Tuesday afternoon at the Central Methodist church with Rev. W. E. Crosssland officiating. When officers arrived at the Chamberlain home to notify the family of the accident they found the table set with a large birthday cake with flaming candles as the centerpiece. The family was waiting to surprise him on his entrance. Funeral service will be held at Central Methodist Church Tuesday at 2 P.M. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.
