(Jack) Monroe, 85, retired farmer and at one time one of Shiawassee County's best known breeders of purebred Holstein cattle, passed away at 12:30 A.M. today at the home of John Schmid of Beehler Street after an illness of about a week. Death was due to pneumonia and complications. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday at the Knapp and Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. C.B. Lyons officiating. The remains rest at the funeral home and burial will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Monroe was born in Caledonia, Canada, on March 6, 1859 a child of John and Mary Monroe. He attended schools in Canada and came to the United States while still a young man. The rest of his life was spent in Shiawassee County, part of the time near Elsie. For years however he lived on a farm on M-47, just north of the Green Meadows school and there, with his partner, Earl Lewis, he developed one of the best purebred Holstein herds in the state. He retired several years ago and for the past seven years had resided at the Schmid residence. In September 1886, he was married to Miss Marian Van Wagoner and the wedding took place in Owosso. Surviving are a nephew, Wallace Findley of Toronto, Canada, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Roxie Richards of Lake Orion, Mich.: a niece, Mrs. Ed Washburn of Owosso; and a son-in-law, Earl Lewis of Corunna, FRD.
