Pierce Dead Member Masonic Society Over Half Century Funeral Held Monday under Masonic Auspices Died Friday, Nov. 27th, at his home in this village, George Sumner Pierce, aged 75 years, 4 months and 26 days. George Pierce was born in Avon township, July 1, 1833and at the age of one year moved with his parents to Richmond, Macomb County. The family returned to Oakland County in 1850 and settled on the banks of Stony Lake in Oxford township, where deceased lived until 1880, when he moved to this village. He was married Nov. 7th, 1877 to Savilla Van Syckle of Waterford township. Thirty seven years ago Mr. Pierce suffered the loss of his arm as a result of an accident but has been able with one arm to do his share of life's work. Deceased had been a member of the Masonic order since 1855 and was master of the lodge for many years. He had held many local positions of trust and honor and for nine years was street commissioner of the village of Oxford. Mr. Pierce had been in poor health for the past eight years. About three years ago he was afflicted with a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered, although he was slowly convalescing Friday at 8 A.M. he was taken with his last illness and lingered but a short time, his spirit departing this earthly body at 12:40. The funeral held Monday at his late home, under the direction of the Masonic order, was largely attended. Rev. Hough, of the M.E. church, preached the funeral sermon and the remains were interred in the Oxford Cemetery. deceased is survived by a wife, two sons, Frank and Lee, one brother and four sisters.
