Van Syckle died in Waterford Came here in an Ox-Cart Stroke of Paralysis last Thursday caused death. Funeral to be held from home of Daughter in Waterford on Wednesday Afternoon. Mrs. W.K. Van Syckle, who had been a resident of Oakland county for 90 years died Saturday night at her home in Independence township, aged 92. The funeral will be held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Chamberlain of Waterford, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with burial in the Sashabaw Plains Cemetery. Born in New York State, Feb 26 1823, Mrs. Van Syckle came to Michigan with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Van Wagoner making the entire journey overland in an ox-cart. They settled at Rochester. she was married Aug. 25, 1844 and with her husband settled in Independence township where she had lived from that time until her death. Seven of the 11 children born to this union survive. They are: John Randolf Van Syckle, Waterford; William K. Van Syckle, Detroit; Lemuel Van Syckle, Waterford; Mrs. C.S. Pierce, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. John Wakefield, Atkinson, Minn.; Mrs. Fred Chamberlain, Waterford; and Mrs. Norman Wager, Rosebush, Michigan. Mrs. Van Syckle was surprisingly well preserved for one of her advanced years and retained her full mentality up to last Thursday when she was stricken with paralysis. She had been almost free from illness during her declining years and was at all times active. Having made her home in the country for so many years, she was well posted on matters of local historical interest. Her family was one of the oldest in the country.
