Lemuel Van Syckle, one of the oldest residents of Oakland County, died Friday afternoon at the age of 98 at his home in Waterford. He was born Aug. 9, 1858, in Independence township. His parents were William and Julia Van Wagoner VanSyckle. The township was named in honor of his Grandfather, Capt. Joseph Van Syckle who came to this area from Independence , NJ and became Independence Township's first supervisor. Mr. Van Syckle spent his entire life in Oakland County and the last 50 years in the village of Waterford. He became a stone mason at an early age and followed this trade until he was close to 70 years of age when he retired to build himself a two-story house of stone. A member of Cedar Lodge No. 60 F. & AM of Clarkston, Mr. Van Syckle leaves a daughter Mrs. Percy Hunt of Pontiac, three grandchildren, 11 great grand children, and two great-great-grandchildren. Service will be held at 2 P.M. Monday from the Sharpe Funeral Home, 115 Main St. Clarkston with the Rev. William Richards officiating. burial will follow in the Andersonville Cemetery.
