The 19th-century monument, which had fallen into disrepair when the group discovered it last year, marks the resting place of Maria Moore's parents and sister. In 1876, Maria (pronounced Ma-RYE-uh), who was born in Lyon, moved with her husband, James, to Milford Township. After James' untimely death in an 1887 buggy accident, Maria took over the family's horse and stock farm — a remarkable move for a 19th-century woman. She ran the business, along with her flower garden and women's club, until her death in 1926. Questers Judy Nelson and Betty Whitworth discovered the gravestone, which dates to the mid-19th century, during a 2006 cemetery tour. Maria's parents, John and Polly Harvey Everitt, and sister Alice are buried beneath the stone. When Nelson and Whitworth saw the monument, the uppermost stone was lying on the ground, broken into pieces. A reception at the site on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007. will feature a brief presentation on the Moore and Everitt families, as well as the Questers International organization, which was founded in 1944 and has more than 15,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. The Milford branch comprises 22 members. The public is invited to attend the event, which will begin at 11 a.m. in the Chubb Road Cemetery at the corner of Chubb and Nine Mile roads in Lyon Township. Light refreshments will be served.
