His grandparents on his mother's side lived at the corner of 13 Mile and Inkster Roads. Bert and family first lived in a small house, which he built, on the site of his grandparents' home at 13 and Inkster. Later he and Mildred lived on the corner of Carol Avenue, in the historic section of the village. For years Bert and his daughter, Mildred, ran the store in Franklin Village, which had the tin ceiling and soda fountain with swirling stools. In 1958 Bert published Franklin's Yesteryear.
