PROVES FATAL TO WILLIS HUTTON, 61 Prominent Ogemaw Man Served 30 Years In U. S. Army Willis Hutton, prominent West Branch man, was stricken with an acute heart attack early Sunday morning at his home here and passed away a very few minutes thereafter. At the time of death Mr. Hutton was 61 years of age. Willis Hutton was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan on November 24, 1877 and came to Ogemaw county with his parents when he was two years old, the family living near Rose City. He was a student in the West Branch schools and graduated from high school with honors. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the United States army where he first served as a private. He saw service in the Spanish American war, The Philippine Insurrection, the Boxer Rebellion, Mexico and the World War. During the World War he served over two years in the First division of the American Expeditionary forces seeing action in five of the major engagements of the war – Castigney, Scissons, San Mihels, and both of the big drives in the Meuse-Argonne sector, One of the medals which he received in connection with his services was the Purple Heart awarded to commemorate his gallantry under fire. He retired from the service in 1931 with a record of 30 years in the army, having been stationed in Washington, D. C. with the Army Band following the world war. He retired with a commission of Master Sergeant. Since his retirement to civil life he made his home in West Branch. Surviving are his widow and daughter Helen, at home; a step-daughter, Mrs. Carl Dudow of East Lansing; two sisters, Mrs. Michael Frawley and Mrs. Margaret Gardner of West Branch. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the parlors of the Steuernol Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Fry officiating. The entire services were under the auspices of the American Legion and burial was made in Brookside cemetery. Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Edward Solaski of Midland and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hutton of Bay City.
