Kurzrock, 71, one of the few remaining United Spanish War Veterans, passed away at his home here at five o’clock Wednesday morning, July 28th, after only five days of illness. Active up to the time he became ill only a few days ago, Mr. Kurzrock was known to nearly all the residents of this city who were accustomed to receiving a smile and a cheerful word as he passed the time of day with his friends. Rev. Benjamin Ouderkirk will conduct final rites at the Steuernol Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 30th. Burial will take place at Brookside Cemetery under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge. Walter Kurzrock was born in Bay City, Michigan on December 4, 1876, the son of William and Sarah Kurzrock. He passed away at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28, 1948 at the age of 71 years and 8 months. A widower at the time of his passing, he was preceded in death by his wife Nora Irons whom he married in Bay City on September 26, 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Kurzrock moved to Ogemaw county from Bay City 24 years ago and had made their home here since that time. He had retired from his work with the Michigan Bell Telephone Co. in the year 1937, after 25 years of employment with that organization. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of American, the United Spanish War Veterans, the Zion Chapter of Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge 376. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Ruth) Basham, of West Branch; three grandchildren, Geraldine, Patty Sue and Austin Basham; and two sisters, Mrs. George Schultz, of Saginaw, and Mrs. Charles Qualman, of Bay City.
