John Petermann for Fifty-nine Years Resident of Old Village Died on Sunday Last. Henry and Fred Petermann were summoned to the home of their father, John Petermann, of Ontonagon, on Sunday, the old gentleman having become so low that recovery was impossible. Henry at once left for there, but Fred was unable to do so, as he has not recovered sufficiently from the injuries received in an automobile accident last summer. Shortly after Henry arrived at home, Mr. Petermann breathed his last. The decedent was one of the real pioneers of the copper country, coming to this country from Wittenberg, Germany, his birthplace in 1853, settling in Buffalo, NY. He sailed form this port for two years, and during his sailing visited Ontonagon and decided to settle down there, which he did in 1855. For several years after settling at Ontonagon he followed the business of a mason contractor and many of the old foundations of the early day mine buildings at the Mass, Evergreen and Minnesota, amongst others were under his direction. He was born on May 6, 1831, and was the oldest son of a prominent Germany army officer. When he came to this country he was accompanied by his younger brother, Captain F.D. Petermann of Kearsarge. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, two sons, Henry, manager of the Phoenix store, and Fred, of Allouez, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary McLain of Ontonagon and Miss Louise, at home. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon from the residence at Ontonagon and many old timers attended the funeral. Mr. Petermann was a charter member of the Rockland Masonic Lodge.
