Scott died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center following surgery and cardiac arrest. His life was devoted to music. He was known for his rich baritone voice and as a conductor of music. He began his singing career at the age of 10 years. He was born in Grand Rapids on March 12, 1933. Mr. Scott's family later moved to Oscoda, where he attended school K-12 and graduated in 1951. He attended the Interlochen Music Camp summer program during his four years in high school and continued singing in Interlochen's massed choir each summer thereafter. He attended the University of Michigan School of Music where he studied choral conducting. During the Korean War, he was conductor of the Men's Army Chorus in Ft. Devens, MA. Under his direction, the chorus took top honors and were invited to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. He served as Director of Music at several churches in the greater Detroit area. Mr. Scott moved to Lakeland, Florida in 1994. He was a member of the Forst United Methodist Church and sang in the cathedral choir. He was also conductor of the George Scott Singers who performed at local churches and various other functions. He was also a member of the Lakeland Choral Society. His hobbies included singing, theater, baseball, cooking, boating and fishing. Surviving are his life companion and caregiver, Virginia Kelly of Lakeland; a son, John Scott of Holly; grandchildren Amy and Ryan Scott of Holly; a sister, Marjorie Smelser of Lakeland; a niece, Debra Wilber of Bradenton; and a nephew, Scott Hogan of West Bloomfield.
