Young DAVIS and his older sister Miss Faye DAVIS, had been skating on the lake and had taken a short cut to the residence of Dr. W. H. VEENBOER, when the accident occurred. The sister made a valiant effort to save her brother, who had gone into a large opening in the ice, but to no avail. A younger sister, Marian, saw the accident and the attempted rescue. About 100 skaters are reported to have been on the lake at the time of the accident and it was only by the use of a crude line of coats and other clothing tied together that the girl was saved from her brother's fate. Skating is one of the best winter sports, but young people are warned to take extra precautions to see that the ice is perfectly safe, especially early in the season before there has been any continued spell of cold weather. Even in site of these precautions, tragedy frequently results, as in the case of the Davis drowning.
