  A terrible tragedy occurred at Marne Tuesday morning, two young men 
attending the high school there losing their lives wading in Sand Creek, which 
was swollen by the heavy rain of the night before.  The boys had a half 
holiday off from school, because of examinations, and with others went to the 
old swimming hole.  The following particulars of the tragedy are taken from 
the Grand Rapids Press:
  The victims were Walter BARTOS, 16, a sophomore and Woodrow FRYER, 14, a 
freshman.
  The two boys, according to other youngsters at the scene, waded out into the 
deep water and being unable to swim more than a few strokes, both sank.  Their 
screams attracted their companions, who were too young and inexperienced, 
however, to be successfull in their rescue attempts.
  Within ten minutes after the boys went down, the bodies were recovered by 
Donald BURCH, Ebert MAUER and Maury CLAYTON.  Efforts at resuscitation under 
direction of Sheriff Ben ROSEMA of Grand Haven were fruitless.  Coroner Govert 
VANZANTWICK decided an inquest was unnecessary.
  The boys were enjoying some free time from school due to the fact that 
examinations were being held in Berlin High School, according to the Supt. M. 
H. LYMBURNER.  The boys both had lived in Alpine Township.
  Surviving young BARTOS are his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Walter BARTOS SR. and one 
brother, Joseph.  Young FRYER is survived by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Frank 
FRYER; four sisters, Margaret, Viola, Audrey, and Dorothy, and one brother, 
Joseph.
