Spencer, aged 93, one of Coopersville's last remaining Civil War veterans died Sunday at the home of Walter Douck, where he had lived for some time. His passing leaves four veterans still living in the community; A. C. Maxwell, John Jackson, Chas. Nichols, and John Park. He was born June 14, 1841 in Brownsville, Jefferson Co., NY. When he was nine months old, his father died and he made his home with his grandparents until he was thirteen. He worked on a farm and when he was eighteen, the "life of a sailor beckoned to him" and he sailed the lower lakes. In 1862, at Cleveland, OH, he enlisted in Co. G, 103rd OH Volunteers. His company marched across KY and into TN to join the Army of General William T. Sherman at Chattanooga, and in 1864 had gone as far as Resaca, GA. He was wounded May 29, 1864 at the Battle of Kenesaw Mt. and was taken to an emergency field hospital where he was operated on. He was discharged from the hospital in Chattanooga, April 29, 1865. He came to Coopersville in 1867 and served for several years as Justice of the Peace. He is survivied by three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Burial was Wednesday with full honors in the Coopersville Cemetery.
