A resident for the past 35 years, Randy was very active in the New Orleans community and a leader at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1951, Randy earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree at Michigan State University and earned his Master of Social Work at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1975. Randy began his career as a Clinical Social Worker at the New Orleans Mental Health Center and continued his career at the St. Bernard Mental Health Center, Jefferson Substance Abuse Clinic, St. Bernard Substance Abuse Clinic, Jefferson Parish Human Services and in Private Practice at the Dante Clinic for over 25 years. He also was an adjunct faculty member at Tulane University School of Social Work, mentoring several students over the years. Community service was center to his life as he was involved for over 20 years with the NO AIDS Task Force and served on the Board of Directors for Project Lazarus. He was also very involved with St. Paul's Lutheran Church serving over the years in the capacity of Vice President, Elder and choir member. Randy's devotion to his church was evidenced in his organizing of St. Paul Lutherans Hurricane Katrina relief efforts later a part of Camp Restore and was responsible for St. Paul's R.A.I.N. (Regional AIDS Interfaith Network) group. He also served as a mentor to many neighborhood children in connecting them to St. Paul's after school program. Randy had a lifelong passion for theatre. His credits include performances at Le Petite Theatre, Gallery Circle Theatre and Capricious Productions at St. Paul. "Boys in the Band" was one of his favorite plays in that he performed in it twice, once in college and again in community theatre. Randy is survived by his partner, Doug Howard, New Orleans. Also surviving are his parents, Edgar and June Rupp of Frankenmuth Michigan, Sisters Ruth (Joe) Ryan, Kalamazoo, MI; Rhonda (Beth Topp) Rupp, Grand Rapids, MI and Rebecca (Richard) Brettnacher, Bloomington, IL. He also had twin nieces, Alison and Elizabeth Brettnacher. Also surviving are god-children: Nick Lewis, New Orleans and Chris Lewis, Nashville, TN and his faithful canine companion Rex. Family and friends are invited to a visitation Sunday, August 29, 2010 beginning at 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, New Orleans. A Funeral Service with be Monday, August 30, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 2624 Burgundy Street, New Orleans. Interment will be at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Frankenmuth, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "NO AIDS Task Force" or St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
