In 1853 he opened the Sproul Inn, also known as the Halfway House in Birch Run, Michigan along the west side of the Plank Road (Dixie Highway) just north of Canada Road. He was also a farmer. He served as Birch Run Township Supervisor in 1855, 1863, and 1865. He also served on the local school board. David Sproul married Hannah Mathewson. She was born circa 1815 in Scotland. She is probably buried on this plot with her husband, but there is no tombstone for her. David and Hannah were both still residing in Birch Run in the 1880 Census, so she died sometime after that.
