In 1845 George and his wife Maria Lotter journeyed to what would become Frankenmuth, Michigan as part of a group of emigrants to perform missionary work. This group with their paster Johann Konrad Wilhelm Loehe founded the town of Frankenmuth as well as St. Lorenz Lutheran Church. His older brother Johann Adam List and his wife Margaretha Mueller arrived about a year later. George died on April 20, 1882 and was buried at St. Lorenz Lutheran church in Frankenmuth, Michigan. The two brothers are buried at the location of the original church while their wives are buried across the street next to the current church.
