In 1845 Maria and her husband Johann George List journeyed to Frankenmuth, Michigan as part of a group of emigrants to perform missionary work. This group came over with their paster Johann Konrad Wilhelm Loehe and founded the town of Frankenmuth as well as St. Lorenz Lutheran Church. George's older brother Johann Adam List and his wife Margaretha Mueller arrived about a year later with a second group of about 90 emigrants. Maria died in 1905 and was buried at St. Lorenz Lutheran church in Frankenmuth, Michigan. The two brothers are buried at the location of the original church while their wives are buried across the street next to the current church.
