Feb 14, 1881 (questionnaire from 6/4/1898 gives her birthdate as Feb 18, 1881) File contains copy of marriage record--Apr 4, 1871 at Lexington, Sanilac Co, MI; states that both were born in Canada. Death record of JOHN BARCUME in file states his birthplace was Ogdensburg, NY; that his father's name was JACOB BARCUME, birthplace France; that his mother's name was MARY [no surname given], birthplace France; that JOHN BARCUME was buried at Glenwood Cemetery, Oneida, NY. Affidavits, etc. in support of pension claims: Mar 30, 1887--JOHN BARCUME, resident of Drewry's Bluff, Chesterfield Co, VA; declaration for invalid pension; stated that in the Dakota territory, in the line of duty, he contracted sore eyes from exposure to alkali dust and about 1864 he contracted diarrhea; that since discharge he lived at Lexington, MI until Nov 8, 1886 and since then to the present at Drewry's Bluff, VA. Aug 30, 1887--JAMES H. BROWN, aged 52 years, resident of Lexington, MI; stated that he was raised in the same neighborhood as claimant, they have known each other since they were boys; that he enlisted in the same company as claimant at the same time. Sep 20, 1887--FRANCIS ROSBURY, P.O. Downington, Sanilac Co, MI; stated that he was a member of the same company as claimant; that in June 1865 JOHN BARCUME contracted chronic diarrhea and sore eyes at Kearney, NE, "we was on the Plains". Sep 20, 1887--JOHN ROSBURY, P.O. Downington, Sanilac Co, MI; stated he was Sgt. of same company as claimant; testified to claimant's disability as in affidavit by FRANCIS ROSBURY. Oct 1, 1887--LADD SMITH, aged 40 years, Sanilac Co, MI; stated that he lived near JOHN BARCUME from about 1855 to spring of 1887 near Lexington, MI; that in spring 1887 claimant moved to the west side of township, about 6 miles away. Nov 22, 1888--FRANK GARDNER, P.O. Manchester, Chesterfield Co, VA; testified to the disability of claimant; stated that he lived near JOHN BARCUME from about Nov 22, 1876 to Nov 22, 1888 in MI and VA. May 8, 1889--ROBERT WAGNER, aged 60 years, P.O. Lexington, Sanilac Co, MI; stated that he lived near claimant from about 1866 to about 1876 near Lexington, MI; stated that he was raised near claimant and resided in the same neighborhood after the war. May 11, 1889--WILLIAM GRANGER, aged 36 years, Sanilac Co, MI; stated that he lived near claimant from about 1856 to about 1886 or 1887. Oct 1, 1889--JOHN BARCUME, aged 45 years, resident of Oneida, Madison Co, NY; declaration for pension increase; witnesses JOHN H. DAVIS and EDWARD BULGER, both residents of Lenox, NY. Jun 8, 1912--JOHN BARCUME, aged 68 years, resident of Oneida, Madison Co, NY; stated that he was born Feb 18, 1844 at Ogdensburg, NY, "not Canada as stated in discharge"; stated that his places of residence since discharge have been: "worked at various places, Detroit & Chicago & other places, Lexington, Mich. 1871-1886, Richmond, Va. 1886-1889, Oneida, N.Y. 1889 to present"; witnesses GEORGE H. RUBY and ORANGE F. SMITH, both residents of Oneida, NY. Mar 11, 1913--JAMES F. HUNTLEY, MD, Madison Co, NY; stated that he treated claimant; stated that he has been a physician for 36 years. Jun 28, 1913--JOHN BARCUME, aged 69 years, P.O. Summit Ave., Oneida, NY; stated that the "family record in my Bible reads: 'John Barcume Born February 8, 1844'. I believe that to be the correct date of my birth not February 18, 1844"; the notary public, JOSEPH BEAL, wrote: "Said Bible was printed MDCCCLXIX as appears by the title page. The record of births therein was evidently copied from something earlier." Jan 8, 1920--RACHEL BARCUME, aged 72 years, Madison Co, NY; declaration for widow's pension; stated that she was born Dec 21, 1848 at Ogdensburg, NY, that she married soldier Apr 4, 1871 at Lexington, MI, that soldier died Dec 29, 1919 at Oneida, NY; witnesses Mrs. MAE BARCUME 10 Summit Ave., Oneida, NY and WALTER WILCOX 66 Stone St., Oneida, NY. Mar 20, 1920--GEORGE SCHEIFELE, aged 55 years, resident of Oneida, NY; stated that he is engaged in the grocery business in said city; that he knows JOHN and RACHEL BARCUME lived together as husband and wife until his death. Jun 26, 1920--FLORA ELIZABETH WOODHURST, aged 71 years, P.O. St. Cloud, Osceola Co, FL; stated that she has known RACHEL BARCUME for over 30 years, that she was a bridesmaid when JOHN and RACHEL BARCUME were married in Apr 1871; that she has corresponded with claimant ever since her marriage, that her oldest sister married NELSON BARCUME, a brother of JOHN BARCUME. Nov 16, 1920--JOHN PETERSON, P.O. 10 Summit Ave., Oneida, NY; stated that he was 70 years of age on Oct 12, 1920; that he first became acquainted with JOHN and RACHEL BARCUME at Manchester, VA "at the time they came there from Michigan, in the fall of 1882. I was working in Manchester at that time for a man named Hinckley and John Barcume...bought a farm from Mr. Hinckley. Mr. & Mrs. Barcume lived in the farm in Virginia about three years when they moved to Oneida, Madison County, NY about three weeks after they left Virginia I left there and came to Oneida, NY where they lived." Nov 17, 1920--ARTHUR W. BARCUME, aged 42 years, P.O. 10 Summit Ave., Oneida, NY; stated that he is the son of JOHN and RACHEL BARCUME, that he was born in MI and moved with his parents to Manchester, VA when he was a child; that his mother has resided with him since his father's death. Nov 29, 1920--MARY A. FELLOWS, aged 50 years, resident of Vernon, Oneida Co, NY; stated that she first knew JOHN and RACHEL BARCUME in VA in 1888; that she moved from VA to Oneida, Madison Co, NY and that JOHN and RACHEL BARCUME moved from VA to Oneida a short time later; that JOHN and RACHEL BARCUME lived together as husband and wife and were never divorced.
