He had been ill from a complication of diseases for several months. He was born in the state of New York and came to Sanilac county in 1852. He was a member of the G.A.R. in good standing, and before his death selected his pall bearers from among his old comrades. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. H 10th Mich. Infty, and served until his regiment was mustered out as a member of the color guard, then re-enlisted and remained until the close of the war. He was a quiet, unpretentious man, but true as steel and grit to the backbone. War tells what a man is made of. There is no bluffing bullets, and the man who can face them without a quiver is a hero in spite of his modesty. That such a man was Comrade Carman every member of his regiment will testify. Francis Carman was a man of sterling character, a kind husband and father, a conscientious citizen and a true friend. In youth and manhood, in war and peace, he lived close to the ideals of human life. In the hearts of his friends, those who knew him best, his name will ever hold a bright and honored place. dz
