Joseph H. Van Dalen August 6, 1934 - August 18, 2023 Joseph H. Van Dalen, age 89, of Palms, died August 18, 2023 in Autumnwood of Deckerville. He was born August 6, 1934, in Palms, the son of the late August and Cecilla (Messing) Van Dalen. On May 25, 1963, in married Margaret Walters in Palms. Joe had worked since he was 12 years old, when, as the oldest of six children, his father passed away. He took various jobs on area farms while growing up and worked at a farm elevator in Palms when he turned 17. At 18, he took a real job" in a shop for about 10 years, and even worked for a while for General Motors. At age 39, he was hired as manager of the Minden City Elevator, which he bought three years later. In the meantime, he had also purchased the Michigan Seed and Supply Company in Port Hope and acquired other farm-related supply businesses, including the Farmers Elevator in Peck. He owned Family & Farm and Supply, with locations in Minden City, Sandusky, Peck, Croswell, Decker, Cass City and Port Hope. Van Dalen received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 as a testimonial to his customers, employees, suppliers, and family, including wife Margaret. He enjoyed mowing his lawn in later years and attended Faith Free Methodist Church. Joe is survived by his wife of 60 years and four daughters: Beth Samuelson of Minden City, Patricia Smith of Palms, Sally (Rick) Chiotti of Laughlin, Nevada and Carol Ruggero of Grand Blanc. Eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, one brother William (Katheryn) Van Dalen of Port Sanilac and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Walters and Mary Doerr. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial service to honor the life of Joseph Van Dalen will take place next summer.
