Minty Dead Commanded Michigan Regiment in Civil War. Had Honorable Record and His Men. Detroit, Aug 25., - Word was received in Detroit today of the death in Jerome, Ariz. Friday, of Gen. Robert H.G. Minty who commanded the Fourth Michigan cavalry during the Civil war. Gen. Minty was one of the noblest fighting officers Michigan sent into the war. It was the squadron of his regiment, commanded by Lieut. Col. Benjamin D. Pritchard, afterward state treasurer and now a prominent attorney in Allegan, that in early May, 1865. after a march of some 160 miles in thirty-six hours, surprised and captured the fleeing president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis and his escort, near Abbeville, Ga. A Wisconsin regiment coming from another direction was present at the capture of the Davis party and the $100,000 reward offered by the federal government was divided between the two regiments. Col. Pritchard was brevetted brigadier general and awarded $3,000 for his part in the capture. Gen. Minty went to the front as lieutenant colonel of the Third Michigan cavalry. In the summer of 1863 he was raised and was made colonel of the Fourth regiment.
