Her family migrated to Fairfield, Herkimer County,(Mohawk Valley) New York before 1810. Plyy's father, Alpha Chaffee died while serving in the War of 1812 at or near Fort Sackett, New York. According to the Chaffee Genealogy of 1909, Polly married a Mr. Justine in 1814.She was married abt. 1814 in New York to John Justin. There was one child of this marriage Alonzo Lee Justin, born 07 August 1815 in Farmers Settlement (Fairfield), Herkimer County, New York. (Farmers Settlement is located off Hwy 28 near Fairfield/Norway/Newport. 1. 1800 Census, Thruman, Washinton-Warren County, New York. Alpha Chaffee Family & Abbee Families. 2-1-1-1-0 1-2-1-1-0; 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-45 & 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-45 (Polly Chaffee was 2 years old). 2. Alpha Chaffee Family in Fairfield, Herkimer County 1810 Census. 3. Older brother, Alpha Chaffee Jr. & family in Frankfort, Herkimer County 1830 Census. 4. Polly married to William W. BOWMAN circa 1824. No details on death of Jphn Justin(e). Family migrated to St. Clair County, Michigan circa 1840. 5. Married to Barna Daniels in St. Clair Township, St. Clair County, Michigan. 1864. 6. Polly Chaffee's grandparents (Atherton Chaffee & Rachel Fuller) were the founders of the Town of Westminster, Windham County, Vermont. In 1751, John Averill, wife and son; Asa, William Gould, wife and son, John, Amos Carpenter and wife, and Atherton Chaffee removed from Northfield, Mass., to Westminster, which was then known as " Township No. 1." They build a blockhouse and lived in it with twenty other families for four years during the French & Indian War. 7. Polly Chaffee's faternal Grandmother, Rachel Fuller, ancester came to America on the Mayflower; PASSENGERS OF THE MAY FLOWER IN 1620: A List of the Names of the Passengers of that noted vessel, the “May Flower,” on her first voyage to this country, in 1620, and landed her passengers at Plymouth Rock, (now in Massachusetts,) on the 11th day of December, O.S., 1620 Fuller: Samuel Fuller; William Butten, his servant, died Nov. 6, 1620 Edward Fuller, died the first winter; Mrs. Fuller, his wife, died the first winter; Samuel Fuller, (called the younger,) son of Edward. 8. Polly Chaffee's maternal 2nd great Grand-Aunt, Sarah Averill Wildes, was executed as a "Witch" during the infamous "Salem Witch Trials". Much has been written about the Salem Witch Trials, that infamous time in American history. The fear of the occult and the subsequent trials were commonplace during the 17th century. How else could the people explain weird weather, earthquakes (one of which occurred around 1690 in Essex Co., MA, and is recorded in the History of Amesbury, Massachusetts), lunar and solar eclipses, and strange illnesses. Mankind had not yet achieved a scientific basis for understanding natural phenomenom or disease. 9. Pollys' Boys The extended Bowman-Chaffee-Justin Clan, settled on farms in what is now the intersection of Bowman Road and Yankee Roads, St. Clair Township, Michigan in 1834. Polly (Chaffee) Justin-Bowman, from New Yorks Mohawk Valley, was the Clan's matriarch. a total of 11 grandson's served in the Civil War; 1 Bowman, 4 Chaffee brothers and 5 Justin brothers served, mostly in Battery "H", 1st Michigan Light Artillery which Brevet Captain (Sr. 1st. LT.) William Justin commanded near the end of the war. An additional 12 young men that had married into the Clan also served in the war. All of Polly's grandsons were wounded at least once with Alonzo & William Justin being wounded twice.
