Mason, 72, of 2969 Military street, who pioneered with his father, the late Frank H. Mason, in drilling salt wells in this area, died unexpectedly in his home Friday. The well known contractor had retired only a week ago from an active career as well driller for the Diamond Crystal Salt company, St. Clair; the Morton Salt company, Marysville, and the Dow Chemical company, Midland, Mich. Death was attributed to heart disease. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Grace Episcopal church. Rev. Dr. A. E. DuPlan, rector, will officiate In- (see Mason,page 5, Col. 3) continued terment will be in Lakeside Mausoleum. Pine Grove lodge No. 11 F. & A. M. will be in charge of rites at the Mausoleum. Port Huron commandery No. 7 Knights Templar will serve as escort. Mr. Mason is survived by his widow, Mrs. Malvina Mason; two daughters, Mrs. Herbert J. Forman, Pittsburg, and Mrs. John Schlinkert, Lansing; a son, Chester Harold Mason, Conneaut, O.; a sister, Mrs. Walter H. Wyeth, Port Huron, five granchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Mason was born in Bay City, Aug. 22, 1881. He and the former Miss Malvina Chavlier were married Sept. 6, 1900. The couple lived in Port Huron since their marriage. When Mr. Mason came to the City he helped his father drill the first mineral water well for the old bath house operated by Hotel Harrington. The pair also drilled the first salt well for the former Port Huron Salt company, now the Morton Salt company. In addition to his work as well driller, Mr. Mason also had served as a member of the City Zoning Board of Appeals. His present term was to expire in 1954. He was a member of Grace Episcopal church, past master of Pine Grove lodge No. 11, F. & A. M.; past commander of Port Huron commandery No. 7, Knights Templar, past high priest of Huron chapter No. 27, RAM and was a thirty-second degree Mason, Moslem Shrine, Detroit. He also was a member of the Masonic Temple association and he was, for many years, installing officer for the Pine Grove Masonic lodge. The remains are in the Albert A. Falk & Son Funeral home. they will be removed in Grace church Monday noon.
