Mrs. Sears, who had been accustomed to hunting and trapping since a child, went out in a duck boat last Thursday to trap muskrats and mink. Her right hand became accidentally caught in one of the large steel traps, and she at once headed her small craft for shore. With the steel trap gripping the bones and flesh of her arm the aged woman left the duck boat, and made a vain effort to reach shore. She floundered in the soft mud of the river bottom and sank to her waist. Although the water at the point where her body was found is but a foot or so deep, she became exhausted in her efforts to extricate herself from the muddy bottom and perished. When she did not return home for supper her relatives became alarmed and a search was made for her. Her body fast in the mud of the river bottom and with the steel trap still gripped about her rigid arm, was found some hours later. Mrs. Sears was but a few feet from shore when she died from exhaustion. She was the mother of Lena Brakeman who was accidentally shot and killed while hunting at the Flats in 1919. Joseph Sears, husband of the deceased died in April 1921. The Sears family is among the best known of the Flats section and the female members are just as expert in hunting and fishing as the men. Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Sears could not be induced o stay in the house; she preferred to be out in all kinds of weather, hunting; fishing or shooting. Mrs. Sears is survived by five sons. Joseph W. Moses, Dave, Theodore and Paul and one daughter, Mrs. Frank McDonald; also by 24 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Additional Comments: She was the daughter of Paul Lozon and Harriet Foster of Ontario.
