Obituary: Hand dated on top, 1900. Helen Wren Farrow died at her home, three miles north east of Sturgis, Thursday, April 26, after a long and painful illness of cancer of thestomach., aged 46 years, 4 months and 29 days. She was the daughter of James Wren and wife, and was born in Burr Oak township Nov. 27, 1853, living all her life in the same locality. She was married to Wm. Farrow Oct 28, 1879, which union was blessed with three daughters, Ora, Genevieve and Florence. The last named died in infancy. Ora and Genevieve, a baby boy, Russel, whom they had adopted, and her husband are left to mourn the death of a loving mother and true wife. Mrs. Farrow united with the Baptist church at about the age of 16, and was known as a kind and faithful Christian woman, and had many friends, as was shown by the large concourse attending the last sad rites. The funeral occurred Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the late home, Rev J.C. Rhodes officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the Tobey cemetery in West Burr Oak. She was born on the farm where she died, July 16, 1860. She attended the Sturgis high school and was a teacher for a number of years. Wren, Emily Vesta...born 25 June 1825, wife of James Wren, died 7 January 1902 Wren, James...born 23 December 1877, died 1 January 1900..... Obituary. James Wren, was born in Keswick, Cumberland County, England, Dec. 23, 1817, and departed this life at his residence in Burr Oak, Jan 8, 1900, aged 82 years and 16 days. At the age of 17 he left the place of his nativity and coming to the United States he made his residence in the town of Scipio, in the State of New York. About the year 1838 he removed from thence to Sturgis, and on February 3, 1848, was married to Miss Emily Leighton. By this union, there were born to them five children. William and Ransom, Helen, now Mrs. Wm Farrow, who with their affectionate mother survive, and Ruth and Carrie V Wren, deceased. Funeral services were held at the late residence at 1:30 o'clock today (Thursday), Rev J.C. Rhodes officiating, with interment in the Tobey school house cemetery. During special protracted services of the Baptist church in Sturgis held in the autumn of 1842, he presented himself to the church with Roswell Rice, Laura A Dixon, his brother, Isaac Wren, and others, and on December 10 of that year was received as a candidate for baptism. The ordinance was administered by the pastor, Rev. Reuben Graham, and the hand of church fellowship was given January 7, 1843. As early as February 17, 1849, we find him, during the absence of the pastor, leading exercvises of the covenant meeting of the church in the official capacity of deacon, to which doubtless he had been priviously elected. In 1848 , he was united in marriage to Emily Leighton, whose quiet Christian life was a great help in founding and maintaining a home of marked christian influence. The widow, two sons and a daughter survive. Wren, Ruth...born September 1856, daughter of James and Emily Vesta Wren, died 22 April 1858 Yelling, Edward...Lot 15, no dates List in column 2 of first page of Tobey Cemetery records, transcriber assumes these are the Cemetery board of Tobey Cemetery #1 Van Vleck, T.C. #2 Turnbull, John L. #3 Bulger, H #4 Forbes, William #5 Forbes, A.E. #6 Bullman, George #7 Green, L.C. #9 Bishop, J.L. #12 Toogood, H (Sexton 1872) Note: From Jean A Briley, dated 7 May 1996, says: The graves for James Wren, Ruth Wren, Carrie Vesta Wren, Helen Frances Wren Farrow are located in front of the Ezra J., Emily V., and Ethel Mae Brown graves (the Browns were cousins). Emily and Ezra's other child, Frances Brown Kline, is buried at Oaklawn Cemetery in Sturgis. She was buried with her first husband, George Wickhizer. There is quite a dip in the ground and that is where the Wren graves are in line with. My father and his older sister (now 94) confirm the facts I am telling you. There were never any markers for these graves. dz
