To make proper use of it, one must understand that a 'State' census differs somewhat from the Federal Census which is taken every ten years, and always in years ending in zero. As you go through this census, please bear in mind, that the names were copied from the original census sheets on file in the Western Michigan University Archives. The handwriting is excellent, but it is spencerian, and the difference between captial L, J, I, and sometimes P is often not clear. When initials only were given, we had to make a "wild" guess. This is a list of all free white males over 21, listed by name. The spelling given is exactly as it appears, and not necessarily as you might think it should be read. It was not until 1850 that the Federal census started listing every one by name, before that only heads of households were listed by name. **************************************************** MICHIGAN STATE CENSUS 1845 ST JOSEPH COUNTY MENDON TOWNSHIP M.
