Roberts had been living and going about his every day work for the last ten years with practially a broken back. Ten years ago Roberts was working in Milwaukee. He was crushed in an elevator accident and at the time physicians declared he could not live. Several bones in his spine were crushed so severely that the physicians pronounced his case hopeless. Despite the predictions of the medical men Roberts began to recover. He was blessed with a strong and rugged constitution, a factor which played a strong part in his recovery. Roberts was several months in the hospital. Before leaving a plaster paris cast was made which fitted to the upper part of his body. With the aid of the cast Roberts recovered sufficiently to take to labor again. Up until the time of his death he enjoyed fair health and was able to do a good day's work.
