   Elizabeth Clark Birch Whiteing was born in Florence township, St. Joseph
county, Michigan, May 18, 1838.  She was a daughter of George and Barbary
(Wagner) Clark who came to Michigan as pioneers in 1835.  Of the original
family, there are now surviving, Mrs. Sarah Johnson of Burr Oak;  Archibald
Clark of St. John;  Mrs. Catherine Baird of Concord;  Mrs. Jane Reed of
Nappanee, Indiana;  and George Henry Clark of Three Rivers.
   Practically all her life has been spent in the county.  She was married to
James Birch in 184.  Eight children were born to them, of whom but three now
survive, Mrs Jennie of the home;  Caleb of Grant, Michigan;  and Mrs. Alice
Ambs, wife of Samuel Ambs of Sherwood, Mich.  There are eight grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.  Two grandsons are with our Expeditionary Force in
France.
   Mr. Birch died in 1876.  She was again married in 1880, her second husband
being Mr. Harry Whiting.  He died in 1892.   
   She has been in feeble health for some time and was attacked by the epidemic
which has scourged the world.  This with her other maladies resulted in her
death at her home a little west of Colon, Wednesday night, November 20, 1918,
aged 80 years, 6 months and 2 days.
   For about twenty-one years she has resided here and was well known by our
older residents.
   The funeral occurred at the home on Saturday morning and was conducted by
Rev. Frederick M. White, pastor of the Colon Baptist church of her choice and
attendance.  The interment was at Lakeside cemetery.
