In 1831, the Harmon family left Phelps New York , and journeyed by canal to Buffalo, and by boat to Deyroit Michigan. In 1838 Dennis was married to Emmeline Westbrook in Wayne Michigan. In 1856, Dennis homesteaded in section 5 of Dayton Township. In 1861 Dennis walked to Saginaw for supplies. On his return trip he stayed the night in a hotel in Wahjahmega and the hotel burned that night. Dennis and a man named Wells were able to get out, but both died in a few days from their burns. There is no record of his death or of his wife Emmeline who died in 1879. Dennis and Emmeline Harmon had ten children in all, the last one born shortly after the death of Dennis. Harmon Lake in Dayton is named for Dennis Harmon.
