When the war broke out he enlisted as a drummer boy in the One Hundred and Thirty-second Pennsylvania Infantry, serving nine mouths, the term of its enlistment. He then served as a three months' man in the Pennsylvania State troops when that State was invaded by the rebel troops. After that he again enlisted in the One Hundred and Twelfth Pennsylvania Infantry as a musician, and served until early in 1866, some ten months after the war closed. In 1867 he came to Tuscola County and was engaged in the surveying business. In 1870 he was elected county surveyor, serving one term. He has also held the following offices: Postmaster at Unionville six years, supervisor for township of Akron five years, register of deeds four years, and is now (1883) register of the probate court and president of the village council. He now resides in Caro and is the senior member of the firm of Staley & Slaght, who are engaged in the real estate and abstract business. He is married and has a family of four children.
