She was born July 5, 1912 in Deford to George A and Edith Stephens. Her mother died when she was 6 months old, leaving her and 2 brothers in the care of their maternal grandparents, Norman A and Rosa Martin of Deford. She married Herbert Phillips Oct. 19, 1930 in Deford, making their home there. She worked at the Deford Grocery from 1957 to 1968, then Erla’s in Cass City, retiring from there in 1972. She leaves a son, Charles and Mary Jane Phillips of Caro; a daughter Ruth and Gilbert Freeman of Deford; 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband June 22, 1962; 2 brothers, N. Azel Stephens of Caro and Floyd Stephens of Flint, and a special friend, Alfred Freeman. Graveside services were held Thursday, July 27, at Novesta Township Cemetery with Pastor Stu Roy, of Deford Community Church, officiating.
