Thomas’s father died young, leaving his wife Margaret a widow with four young children. In 1843 Margaret emigrated to Canada, taking her four children Ellen, Sarah, Thomas, and William and her 80-year-old mother, Elinor Lewis, with her. They settled in McGillivray Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, in the vicinity of Clandeboye where Margaret had relatives. Margaret (Lewis) Culbert later married Robert Hodgins, Sr., a resident of Clandeboye. Emeline was the daughter of Aaron and Eleanor (Shaw) Sutton, also of McGillvray Township, Middlesex County. Thomas and Emeline married on December 19, 1849 in Biddulph, Middlesex County, and in 1880 emigrated to the United States where they settled in Tuscola County, Michigan. Thomas and Emeline had fifteen children: Franklin Culbert, who married Agnes Murday; Emily Culbert, who married Robert E. Kincaid, Sr.; William Culbert, who married Mary Beardon; James Culbert, who married Mollie Struch; Sarah Culbert, who married Melvin Jones; Thomas Walter Culbert, who married Mary Elizabeth Patterson; Aaron Culbert, who married Barbara Luebhart; Joseph Anson Culbert, who married Ella Murdoch; Alonzo Henry, who married Elizabeth Hachtel; Knisley Culbert (twin), who died in infancy; Omer Culbert (twin), who died in infancy; Edgar Culbert, who died at four years of age; Charles Milford Culbert, who married Mary “Minnie” Crosby; Alice Culbert, who married Clarence Ralph Mallory; and Cora Estella Culbert, who married Herman Luther Burroughs. Notes: On the death records of both Thomas Culbert and his brother William Culbert, their father’s name is listed as William instead of Thomas. Emeline had a twin sister, Adeline, who married George Windsor. They had seventeen children. Adeline emigrated from Canada to the U.S. in 1892 and lived in Brown City, Sanilac County, Michigan, where several of her children had settled. She died on June 3, 1907.
