Melvin and his first wife Mary E. Benson lived in Howard Township, Steuben County, New York, where she died in 1845. Melvin then married Clarissa Crowell, daughter of Theodore and Anna (Collins) Crowell, also of Howard Township, and they moved to Tuscola County and settled in Indianfields Township in 1852. Additional Comments: Melvin Gibbs owned and operated Gibbs House, which was the first hotel in Caro (then called Centerville) and the first frame building in the village.
