They moved to Tuscola County and settled in Indianfields Township in 1852. Melvin and Clarissa had four children: Elias S., Alice J., Clara E., and Thomas O. Gibbs. Clarissa was the daughter of Theodore and Anna (Collins) Crowell of Howard Township, Steuben County, New York. Additional Comments: At least two of Clarissa's brothers, Elias C. and Hiram H. Crowell, also moved to Michigan in the early 1850s, settling in Calhoun County and St. Joseph County, respectively. Clarissa's father Theodore Crowell is buried with the Elias C. Crowell family in the North Athens Cemetery in Calhoun County, whereas her mother, who died in 1844, is buried in Meeks Cemetery, Howard Township, Steuben County, New York.
