(Black) Hewes Gibbs (November 12, 1832 – October 4, 1892) was the second wife of Sabin Gibbs (October 3, 1823 – March 25, 1905), the son of Joel and Elizabeth (Root) Gibbs of Benson, Rutland County, Vermont. Adaline was the daughter of Sylvester and Mehitable Black of Geauga County, Ohio, who were early settlers in the Vassar area. Sabin and Adaline had no children. This photo is a close-up of one side of the family monument on which the inscription reads: “Adaline C., Wife of S. Gibbs. Born in Newbury, O. November 12, 1832. Died in Caro, Mich. October 4, 1892”. There is also a small headstone on the lot on which only the name “Adaline” is inscribed. Additional Comments: Adaline’s first husband was Nelson Hewes (July 1, 1829 – March 1, 1864), son of Samuel H. and Priscilla (Wood) Hewes. They had one daughter, Flora A. Hewes. Nelson, who served in the 23rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Company D, died of disease and is buried in the Tuscola Township Cemetery.
